Binational Project

Title of the project

Conservation of biodiversity in the binational basins of the Mira-Mataje rivers: construction of biophysical and socio-environmental bases for the conservation and adaptive management of ecosystem services.

Purpose

This project seeks to improve the conditions necessary for the conservation of ecosystems in the binational basins of the Mira and Mataje rivers; two basins that are part of the biogeographic Chocó, an area of very high biodiversity.

To achieve this purpose, the project aims to develop:

  • Scientific knowledge of the state of watershed ecosystems and their ecosystem services.
  • The understanding of territorial governance and the interaction of stakeholders.

Goals

The objectives of this project are:

  1. Support decision-making processes in binational basins by providing high-quality, timely and easily accessible information.
  2. Promote the maintenance of the ecological integrity of binational basins, through an improvement in the resilience of their ecosystems and a greater understanding and protection of their ecosystem services.
  3. Improve governance and governability conditions in binational basins, generating and / or supporting instances of coordination and collaboration between actors, seeking participatory planning and implementation of management strategies, and promoting a basin vision.

Products

From objective 1

  • "Wiki Mira-Mataje": A "wiki" system that concentrates and summarizes the existing information on the binational basins of the Mira and Mataje rivers, and allows contributions, editions, and information updates by individuals and organizations.
  • Geodatabase: A geographic information system (GIS) that compiles biophysical and socio-environmental information from the binational basins of the Mira and Mataje rivers.
  • Status of Binational Watersheds: A publication that describes the status of the binational watersheds of the Mira and Mataje rivers, and includes a list of knowledge gaps.

From objective 2

  • Ecosystem services: A report that presents an identification and evaluation of some of the ecosystem services of the binational basins of the Mira and Mataje rivers and their geographical distribution.
  • Priority areas for conservation: A map that describes areas of special importance due to their richness in biodiversity and the generation of ecosystem services in the binational basins of the Mira and Mataje rivers.

From objective 3

Governance analysis: An analysis of governance in selected sub-basins including maps of "social basins".
Multi-stakeholder dialogue spaces: Meetings of multiple stakeholders in Colombia and Ecuador, including binational forums.
Participatory management strategy: A guide document and comprehensive action plan to improve conservation in the binational basins of the Mira and Mataje rivers.
